What You Should be looking for in a Waterfall

Before you go out and buy any waterfall for your Crestie, you should understand what features you should be looking out for. For that reason, I will be sharing some key features to look out for before you make that purchase:

  • Timer Controls (Ideally independent)
  • Waterproof LED lights
  • Looks natural
  • Easy to maintain

Timer Controls (Ideally independent)

For some of the waterfalls out there they have LED lights as well as the waterfall itself. Ideally, you should be looking for a device that has independent controls so both of these are independent of each other.

Waterproof LED lights

This is kind of logical, and arguably self-explanatory. But, if you love the LED lighting on these waterfalls it is essential that they are waterproof for safety and long life.

Natural Look

This is more of a preference, but I feel that it is quite a universal desire. Basically, the natural look of the waterfall is a good feature to have, in my opinion.

Easy to maintain

One thing I absolutely need is easy maintenance. I don’t know about you, but I hate buying something, and then finding out, when I get it home, that it is a real pain to maintain. Therefore it needs to be easy to maintain.

My Best Crested Gecko Waterfalls

In this section, I will share with you three of my best waterfalls for Crested Geckos. You can use the features I highlighted above to see which ones meet your needs.

01. Zoo Med Waterfall (Best Option)

Pros:

  • Timer control (independent functionality)
  • Waterproof lights (LED)
  • Great looking (Natural)
  • Encourages natural drinking

Cons:

  • Needs regular maintenance

What I like about this Zoo Med waterfall

I like this one because it has a great natural look. This may not mean much to you, but I think this is a big factor for a lot of people that actually purchase these waterfalls.

In addition to this look are some cute waterproof LED lights that look great in dim light, even if it’s just for you to have a guide while you organize things in their enclosure.

It also has a neat timer control. This is independent, but what does that really mean? Well, you have independent controls from the LEDs and the waterfall itself.

What I do not like about this Zoo Med waterfall

Like anything, nothing is perfect, and this Zoo Med waterfall is not exempt from this. The main issue I have is based on laziness, to be honest.

As you know, while you care for your crestie there will be live insects in the enclosure, right? Well, unless you regularly (ideally daily) replenish the water there is a good chance you will find one of these insects in there.

This makes the water tainted and not really drinkable. Therefore, you need to keep maintaining it regularly.

02. Zoo Med Naturalistic Waterfall

Pros:

  • Humidity Levels (Easy to maintain)
  • Accessories included
  • Encourages natural drinking
  • Great for crested geckos

Cons:

  • The reservoir needs to be filled regularly
  • The pump is not the strongest

What I like about this Zoo Med Naturalistic Waterfall

Firstly I like the fact that this is easy to maintain. It helps to maintain the humidity levels well in the enclosure. It also comes with quite a few accessories such as the water pump, tubing, mesh for the enclosure and hydro balls.

Like the other waterfalls, it encourages the natural drinking behavior of your Crested Gecko. This will increase his daily hydration. And, in general, it is great for your crestie.

What I do not like about this Zoo Med

If you are like me, lazy at times, I don’t like too much maintenance work for any purchase I make, are you with me? Well, unfortunately, this reservoir requires regular refilling. In all honesty, this can be more than once a day. It’s not a deal-breaker, but I need to mention it.

Finally, the water pump. It does the job, but I would like to see a bit more strength from it, ideally.

03. Hagen Waterfall

Pros:

  • Beautiful Hawaiian Tiki look
  • A regular supply of freshwater
  • Raises humidity levels
  • Pump is included

Cons:

  • Bit small

What I like about this Zoo Med Naturalistic Waterfall

One of the things I like about this waterfall is simply the look of it. It has some interesting looking Hawaiian Tiki look that makes it stand out from the rest. It supplies a lovely regular supply of fresh water which encourages your Crestie to consume more water.

It also comes with an efficient water pump and helps to raise the humidity in the enclosure.

What I do not like about Zoo Med

In general, this enclosure is fine. But, I will have to comment on the size. It is a bit small. If you have a monster size enclosure, make sure if its the best for your needs.

Related Questions:

In this section, I am going to answer some questions related to Crested Geckos, enclosures and waterfalls. If you have any extra questions that you need answering feel free to drop a reply below:

Q: Do clay pebbles absorb water?

Yes. clay pebbles absorb water. If you have an enclosure you may be interested in clay pebbles and why they are popular. One of their main features is the fact that retain their shape well when they get wet. Even if they are immersed in water.

Also, not only do they hold their shape, but they also retain water well and are good at maintaining humidity levels.

Q: Can you use a fish tank for a crested gecko?

Yes, you can use a fish tank for a crested Gecko. However, even though it’s possible it is not ideal. Furthermore, it is not advisable to use this. But why?

  • No front-facing opening
  • Incorrect orientation for a Crestie

No front-facing opening

Ideally, for a Crested Gecko, you need an opening at the front. Whilst this isn’t mandatory, it is highly desirable to make it easier to care for him.

Incorrect orientation for a Crestie

One of the biggest issues with fish tanks is their orientation. Basically, they are typically wide rather than tall, are you with me? Your crestie really needs a tall enclosure so they can benefit from the higher placed areas. Therefore, as it is, out of the box, these aquariums are not ideal.

Q: Are Crested Geckos Cuddly?

Yes, Crested Geckos are cuddly. Interestingly some people look at cresties and are concerned that they may be aggressive. I think this may come from the look of the sharp prickly spikes on their skin.

The ironic thing is, these spikes are not really sharp at all. And, cresties are quite docile and quite easy to handle. So, most people need not be concerned about cresties in this context.

Q: Why is it called a Crested Gecko?

Crested Geckos are named after the crested type shapes that are on its head. It’s as simple as that. Many people over-complicate the meaning, but it is relatively straight forward.
