Do you need a humidifier?

You may be wondering if a humidifier is even needed. The reality is, it depends on what chameleon you have.  Some need a careful eye on their humidity, while others do not. Remember there are many different chameleon species to be considered here.

To be more specific, if you have a veiled chameleon it’s not so much of an issue, but if you have a panther or even a Jackson chameleon then you will need to keep an eye on it, and a humidifier will help to regulate this.

What to look out for in a Humidifier (Before you buy)

Before you consider picking up one of these, or any other humidifier for that reason, I will like to share with you some features that will help you. These are features you should be looking out for in the ideal choice.

  • Dry run protection
  • No-spill valves
  • Adjustable fog controllers
  • Stretchable hoses
  • Warranty

Dry run protection

This is a handy feature. It prevents your device from running without any water in it. Even this does not sound like much of an issue, believe me, dry running is a real issue to consider. It may be in the form of indicator light to alert you when the water has run out or potentially shut off the device once it’s run out.

No-Spill Valve

This handy little feature helps to reduce water spillage during a refill. It is great to have unless you don’t really care about water spills and mess. If, on the other hand, you are like me and you do care about those things, then this is a great feature to have.

Adjustable fog controllers

If you want to keep control of the humidity, then this adjustable controller is ideal. Depending on the size of your enclosure you can adjust it as you see fit.

Stretchable hose

The stretchable hose is quite useful, especially if you have a large enclosure. Look out for this feature to get the full benefit in your enclosure.

Warranty

Great customer service is always appreciated. But, a warranty is right up there as a priority. Look out for vendors that offer a good warranty for that extra peace of mind, before you buy.

My Best 3 Chameleon Humidifiers

In this section, I will share 3 of my best humidifiers with you. I will explain what I do and don’t like to help you understand more about these devices to help you research the best option for you.

01. Evergreen Pet Supplies Humidifier (Best Overall)

Pros:

  • Great for Chameleons
  • Protection against dry-running
  • No-spill valve – Makes filing up easier
  • Can be used with most enclosures
  • Warranty (6 months)

Cons:

  • The connecting hose has a loose-fitting
  • Refilling can be messy

What I like about the Evergreen Humidifier

Firstly this humidifier is a great choice for Chameleons. If you have ever come up against issues with humidifiers running when it is empty, and you know the issues this can cause, then rest easy, because this protects you from this.

It has a handy no-spill vale that will make life a lot easier when you need to refill this bad boy. The great thing is it can be fitted with most enclosures, so the chances are, your enclosure is covered.

To top it off it comes with 6 months warranty for that extra peace of mind.

What I do not like about the Evergreen Humidifier

Like any product, there are some issues to report. Firstly the connecting hose that connects the hose to the fogger seems a bit loose. In particular when it is under some pressure, for instance when the hose is bending. This may not affect everyone, depending on how you situate the device, but worth mentioning.

Lastly, is the issue with refiling.  Yes, it has a no-spill valve, but when you need to refill you may notice when removing the middle portion of the hose from the base, there may be water collecting there, even if the device is expected to be empty, which may leave a real mess.

02. Betazooer Humidifier

Pros:

  • Great for Chameleons
  • Hose is stretchable
  • Warranty (90 days)
  • Indicator for when water runs out

Cons:

  • Does not shut off when water is low
  • Needs to be turned off periodically

What I like about the Betazooer Humidifier

Firstly this humidifier is a good one for Chameleons. The hose is stretchable which makes it a lot easier to get it set up in your preferred location. On top of this, it comes with a nice 90-day warranty for that extra peace of mind. This indicates that the manufacturer is confident with their product.

Finally, it’s important to find out when the water runs out. Why? because no water means the device is running for no reason, burning unnecessary energy and potentially damaging itself. Fortunately, this device has an indicator so that you can avoid this happening.

What I do not like about the Betazooer Humidifier

Earlier I talked about the indicator that shows when this humidifier has run out of water, right? Well, while this is a great feature. It also highlights an issue that I want to mention, it does not turn itself off when the water is low.

Personally, if it can indicate its run out, it should be able to turn itself off to avoid any problems with it running without water. Also, it seems that this humidifier does not love being on all the time, I mean all day and night, 24-7. You may find that you will need to turn it on and off periodically, which could be annoying for you.

03. Zoo Med Humidifier

Click here to see the price on Amazon

Pros:

  • Compact Humidifier (Ultrasonic)
  • Adjustable Output (Fog Control)
  • Flexible

Cons:

  • Needs to be refilled quite regular
  • Takes a while fog large enclosures

What I like about the Zoo Med Humidifier

This is a great compact ultrasonic humidifier. I like the fact that it comes with an adjustable fog control so that you can get the best setting for your specific enclosure. Lastly, it’s quite flexible, but what do I mean by that? Simple, if you have a smaller enclosure, it’s ideal to increase the humidity.

If on the opposite side you have a larger enclosure, the vendor suggests you can use this to create a little microclimate.

What I do not like about the Zoo Med Humidifier

Like all of these devices, they are not perfect and this Zoo Med is no different. So, I will share a couple of my observations with you now.

Firstly, it is quite a small humidifier, so you may find that you need to refill it quite regularly. To give you a rough idea, if you keep it on the lowest setting it may last 4 hours, maybe slightly more.

Also, due to its size and overall power, it would take quite a long time to fill a large enclosure (e.g. 40 gallons or more).
